Former Basketball Star Dead In New Haven Shooting

View Comments

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ A 25-year-old former high school and college basketball standout from Connecticut is dead after a shooting in New Haven.

The New Haven Register reports the victim was Timothy “T.J.” Mathis, who starred at Hamden High School, then played at Morgan State University and Mercyhurst College.

Police say Mathis, of New Haven, was found in a vehicle at a housing project at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. But police told the Register that Mathis may have been shot elsewhere and driven to the scene. They said there were no shell casings or obvious bullet holes at the scene.

Police say Mathis was at a party earlier, but the circumstances and location of the shooting remain unclear.

The apparent killing would be the 25th in New Haven this year, more than in all of 2010.
