Unusual Teaching Approach In Hartford School

Hartford officials today held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for McDonough school.

The middle school on Hillside Avenue will be the first in the state to use the expeditionary learning model.

Superintendent Christina Kishimoto says the program allows students in each grade level to pick a topic to investigate.

“It is very exciting, because the kids do much of the unit planning with the teachers,” Kishimoto said.  “That is unusual because teachers usually do their planning and unit development with each other.”

The school will serve grades 6 through 8, when it opens August 30.

The educational program has been around since 1992.

The former elementary school’s name has been changed to McDonough Expeditionary Learning School.

The building has been renovated in recent years.
