GROTON, Conn. (AP) _ The University of Connecticut’s Avery Point campus is getting a new student center and renovated auditorium.
University officials announced on Tuesday that demolition of the old student center in Groton will begin in August and construction on the new project will start in the spring.
Upgrades include a 5,000-square-foot student center with food service and a game room, and a renovated 300-seat auditorium. Officials say the projects will cost $6.8 million and be completed by 2013.
UConn spokesman Michael Kirk says funding for the improvements was approved in 2009 as part of the $2.3 billion UConn 2000 building program.
Avery Point is a UConn regional campus on Long Island Sound that is home to the school’s marine science programs.
