WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) _ A plan to put an indoor gun range near a Waterbury school has drawn protests from parents and community members.

The underground range is planned at the site of a former Timex factory next to the Sprague Elementary School.

The plan, approved by Waterbury’s zoning commission last week, would place the range in a basement where the walls would be lined with steel plates and sound-dampening material.

But parents and school officials say they are concerned about the potential for stray bullets, guns being transported so close to a school and the possibility of lead contamination from ventilation systems.

A group of parents plan to meet at the school Thursday to discuss a possible court challenge to the range.
