Probation For Former Music Teacher In Student Sex Case

EAST LYME, Conn. (AP) _ A former East Lyme music teacher has been sentenced to a year of probation after pleading no contest to a sexual assault charge involving a student.

Prosecutors say 25-year-old Amy Schneider acknowledged having an inappropriate relationship with the male student, who is now 18-years old.

Victim advocate John Adriano says the victim had no objection to a plea deal that allowed Schneider to plead guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault, a misdemeanor, which allows her to avoid having to register as a sex offender.

Prosecutor Theresa Anne Ferryman said that because of her conviction, Schneider will be prohibited from applying for a teacher’s certificate for five years.

The student was old enough to legally consent to sex, but it’s illegal for school employees to have sex with students.
