Former Torrington Official Dies In Scooter Accident

TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) _ Torrington police say a former city official has died after he was hit by a pickup truck while riding his motor scooter.

Authorities say 67-year-old Bertrand Theroux, a former member of the city’s finance board and a retired accountant, was riding his scooter on the side of Route 4 westbound Monday afternoon when he tried to turn and was struck by the pickup.

He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police told The Register Citizen that the pickup driver, 56-year-old Leslie Palmer of Torrington, was driving behind Theroux when Theroux suddenly turned left in front of the truck. Sgt. Linus Venclauskas says Theroux apparently didn’t know the pickup was behind him.

No charges have been filed. Police are still investigating.
