First Woman Mayor Of New London Dies

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ New London’s first female mayor, Ruby Turner Morris, has died at the age of 103.

The Democrat served as mayor in 1975 and 1976 after having retired as an economics professor at Connecticut College.

The Day of New London reports that she died Saturday.

Morris also served for three decades on the board of the Southeastern Transit District, the region’s subsidized bus service.

She also continued to teach at Connecticut College as a professor emeritus of economics.

City Democrat Anthony Basilica called Morris a classic, independent woman “from a bygone era.”

The Rev. Carolyn Patierno of All Souls Unitarian Church in New London says the church choir went to the Niantic rehabilitation center where Morris was living last week to sing to her.
