WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island authorities are looking into why a Mystic, Conn. man died 16 hours after he was arrested in Westerly.
A family attorney tells the Day of New London that 34-year-old Ryan O’Loughlin was pepper sprayed by police and arrested shortly before 1 a.m. last Thursday outside the Perks and Corks wine and coffee bar.
Attorney Mark Dana says O’Loughlin was arraigned on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and was released on bond.
After returning home, he was taken to a local hospital where he died that afternoon. Dana says O’Loughlin may have suffered other injuries while in custody.
Connecticut’s medical examiner says an autopsy did not immediately reveal a cause of death.
Westerly Police Chief Edward Mello has ordered an internal review of the arrest.
