Lawyers Seek Judge’s Intervention In Spring Weekend Death

VERNON, Conn. (AP) – Prosecutors and defense attorneys have asked a judge to intervene in plea negotiations in the case of a 20-year-old man charged with throwing a fatal punch during Spring Weekend festivities at the University of Connecticut.

William Gerace a lawyer for Edi Rapo of East Hartford, said Friday he expected his client to reject the deal.

He said in court that the sentencing range under the deal is too wide. A new court date has been scheduled for June 10 before Judge Terrence Sullivan.

Rapo is charged with manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Jafar Karzoun of Milford.

Authorities say Rapo, who was not a UConn student, punched Karzoun in the face on April 23, 2010 outside a restaurant during the annual weekend of parties. Karzoun fell, hit his head and later died.
