State officials are warning motorists to use extra caution on the Merritt Parkway and Interstate 84 in the western part of the state after several moose sightings.

Officials with the Department of Environmental Protection say a moose was spotted Monday on Porter Hill Road in Trumbull near Route 25 and the Merritt Parkway, Other moose were seen near Interstate 84 near Waterbury and Bethel in the past week.

The DEP says there are more than 100 moose in the state now. Officials say they expect the population to continue to grow and expand from northern areas of the state to southern sections.

Moose sightings can be reported to the DEP’s 24-hour dispatch line at 860-424-3333.
