Mayor To Update Financial Reports

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra says he will amend his financial disclosures to the city’s ethics commission following reports that his spouse collects about $2,000 a month in federal Section 8 rent subsidies as the landlord for low-income tenants.

Segarra also said Sunday he would seek a legal opinion about the situation.

The rental subsidies to Charlie Ortiz, Segarra’s spouse, have amounted to more than $120,000 since May 2006, when Segarra became a city councilman, and were reported in The Hartford Courant.

Segarra said in a statement that the newspaper report had “no merit” but said he made his decisions based on “being transparent and open.”

Segarra said he didn’t think Ortiz’s arrangement with the Department of Housing and Urban Development amounted to a city contract.
