EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Construction has begun on an outdoor ice rink at Rentschler Field, UConn’s football stadium, which will be the site a two-week hockey festival in February.
The Whalers Hockey Fest is the brainchild of former Hartford Whalers owner Howard Baldwin, who now runs the American Hockey League’s Connecticut Whale.
The event will feature a Feb. 19 game between the Whale and Providence Bruins.
There will also be an alumni game between former members of the Hartford Whalers and Boston Bruins, a celebrity game, five college games, and numerous junior, high school, prep school and youth hockey games.
Construction crews are using 600 feet of lumber, 800 tons of sand, 10 miles of refrigeration tubing, and 25,000 square feet of fabric for the rink, along with 30,000 gallons of water for ice.
