Woman Dead in Newtown Fire

Firefighters remain on the scene of a fatal overnight fire in Newtown.

Firefighters responded to 16 Philo Curtis Road–in the Sandy Hook section of town–just after midnight after neighbors reported of smoke.

The flames were quickly put out, but the woman died as she tried to escape.   Authorities say the woman was in her 50s, but have not released a name.

Fire investigators think the fire began on the first floor and spread to the second floor. The cause remains under investigation.
