So, I sit here on a Monday Night alone watching TV, tracking the Giants and Vikings and thinking about what could take place Sunday at Madison Square Garden. The UConn Women are on the verge of an 88th consecutive win that would equal the UCLA Men’s Teams of the 70’s. Equal yes, compare no. That is the great debate. Geno Auriemma himself won’t compare them because it’s like comparing apples and oranges. It’s Men’s Basketball vs Women’s Basketball. The only comparisons are they’re run by two amazing coaches. John Wooden set the standard for excellence and Geno Auriemma is a great admirer of him to the point he’s duplicated what Wooden did in Westwood for the Women’s Game.
Ok, they’ve both had great players during these runs as you’d expect. In fact, Bill Walton has been quoted as saying he’s a big fan of what UConn is doing now. And why not ? Great team chemistry like those UCLA teams of the past. And a coach who strives for perfection and catches greatness. And the players bought into the system. Listen, no men’s team should never come close to this record. Heck, it’s been over 30 years since a team ran the table. And wherever this UConn Women’s streak ends, you’d think it, like Maya Moore’s UConn scoring record won’t be touched for a long, long time….if ever.
Sunday, the Huskies play at MSG vs Ohio St. They Buckeye’s loss at Syracuse Saturday takes some luster off the first meeting between the Huskies and Buckeyes. Maybe the empty cavern of the Carrier Dome had something to do with it. Reguardless, the Buckeye’s have a history of losing big games. Their recent NCAA History is proof positive of that. Sure Jantel Lavender could be a handful in the post. And Samantha Parahalis is a great disher. But it would appear with the panic attack they had against the Orange, they won’t be smart enough to beat UConn. That’s right I said smart. Recent history says if a team is going to beat the Huskies, they need to be intelligent in preparation, good b-ball IQ and then, great execution. Stanford, Notre Dame and maybe Duke are both talented and smart enough to beat UConn.
Then again, they don’t have Maya Moore. I read today that since her freshman year in high school, her record is 248-5. And she can tell you about all 5 easily. All she does is know how to win. She finds a way and wills her team to do so. Just like a certain former Husky who some like to compare her to (wore #3 with initials DT ?). And that is just not fair. Dee was a guard, Maya is a forward. BUT they have the same drive to be perfect.
I am of the belief that this streak will hit 90 before it could end at Stanford December 30th. And I still believe it will end this season. It’s logical right ? Just like saying it would only take 7 years in the Big East before the Football Huskies would go to a BCS Game. Oh wait , that did indeed happen. It’s good times in Storrs for sure. Hope the Holiday Season finds you and yours happy and healthy. Thanks for always tuning in !
