Tampa/3:30pm/Dec 2 – Well here we are in the fun and sun of Florida. Tonight, the Women of Storrs play their seventh straight Big East Opener on the road at USF. Where the Huskies have beaten the Bulls in all 9 previous meetings. I’d expect the trend to continue tonight at the Sun Dome.
While we saw Maya get her 1,000th rebound Sunday, joining Tina, Rebecca and Jamelle in that group as the only 4 to do so, Miss Moore needs 23pts to surpass her former UConn Teammate (Charles) to become the all-time leading scorer in Women’s history. At the pace she’s off to, it should happen this evening. And as long as she stays healthy, she’ll put up such a number by season’s end that will be very hard to top considering the style of play and unselfishness we see from this program.
The main reason ? Well, how many ladies have entered her freshman year needing to make an impact as a top scorer right away ? Keri Bascom and Rebecca Lobo come to mind. Certainly not Diana with all the talent they had in 2000-01 (pre injuries to Shea & Svet) and Nykesha Sales had Rebecca, Jenn and yes, Kara as options in 1994-95. Maya has been the mark of consistancy in all phases in her career. She however has become more creative of a scorer inside and seems to be getting to the line more. Maybe not enough for Geno’s liking, but it’s better.
As for the team, it’s still a work in progress and will continue to be all season. It all starts in practice. The freshmen continue to struggle with this and it’s not going over well with the coaching staff. Geno has said that eventually, it’ll catch up with them as a unit.
Tonight maybe ? USF is 5-3,and like Sacred Heart (Sunday’s Opponet) has beaten Auburn. They brought in the JUCO POY in Andrea Smith who happens to lead the Bulls in scoring at 17.5ppg. Defensively in 6 of their 8 games they have forced at least 24 turnovers again lesser competition. Tonight versus the Huskies, perhaps a different story.
I also had the chance to talk with Skip Holtz today in person as we recorded the scouting report for the UConn Football Magazine (6:30pm Saturday) and a piece for halftime on his last season in Storrs, 1998 where the foundation was set for what was to come. He & Geno were good friends in Storrs and have been texting this week on the events Saturday. Geno joked that seeing as USF can’t win the Big East with a win, the Bulls should roll over at Ray Jay..Skip fires back only if Geno’s team does the same tonight..
It’s the first of four games in four days tonight..Tomorrow, it’s Phil Chardis & I with the Men and UMBC in what could be a fast paced game at the XL Center. Of course football Saturday night and the women & Sacred Heart Sunday at 12:30 downtown. It’s a crazy time of year with all 3 ongoing. I have a much better appreciation for what Joe used to do in doing as many games as he used to. Speaking of Joe, he’s got the condensed version of the Randy Edsall Show tonight at 6:10 before the fun from Tampa begins. Enjoy !
