NORWALK, Conn. (AP) _ A former teacher at a Norwalk high school who was accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student has been sentenced to one year in prison as part of a plea deal.
On Friday, 54-year-old John Tate of Trumbull withdrew the not guilty pleas he previously entered. The former Brien McMahon High School teacher pleaded guilty in Stamford Superior Court to one count each of second-degree sexual assault and tampering with a witness.
According to The Hour newspaper, Tate also was sentenced to 20 years of probation and was ordered to register as a sex offender.
His lawyer says Tate had faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The lawyer, Mark Sherman, told the newspaper that his client wanted to accept responsibility for his actions and allow the victim to have closure.
Tate will begin his sentence after a court appearance set for Nov. 28.
