PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A man who launched a cross-country canoe trip from Portland, Ore., is poised to complete his 6,000-mile journey _ in Portland, Maine.
Alexander Martin, of Kensington, Conn., was nearing the finish Friday of a grueling trip that began in April 2009 and included 600 miles of portage. He’s expected to paddle down the Presumpscot River to Portland’s East End Beach on Friday.
Martin says his entire solo trip was human powered, either by paddle or pedal. He had a portable bike that he used to pull his canoe on longer portages.
Chris Stec, of the American Canoe Association, says it’s an epic journey that has helped raise awareness for America’s water resources.
