Immerse yourself into an inspirational environment of art as you learn to paint at the Mystic Museum of Art (MMoA). Over 100 years ago an artist colony, Mystic Art Association, began to grow and paint landscapes along the Mystic River. Today, MMoA continues to inspire creativity by offering eight types of painting classes for everyone, from novice painters to experts.  There are classes on painting forms, figures, photo to canvas, and in homage to MMoA’s origin, landscapes using various methods and styles including oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolor, monochrome, and palette painting. MMoA helps students have a better understanding of values, shadows, spatial orientation, techniques, contrast and dimensions and covers a spectrum of skills from basic set-up to color mixing, proportions and perspective. They even have an online downloadable supply list for each class to make gathering of supplies a one-stroke process.

One way to learn anything is look at it from historical perspective, which adds depth, inspiration and appreciation. Middletown Art Academy (MAA) takes this perspective in their painting classes, offering a 10-12 week program for watercolors, gouache, acrylics, and oils. Classes are structured in a chronological walk-through from historical perspectives to building skills through exercises and finally to personal aesthetics and styles. They cover technique, the color wheel, mixing, shapes, lines, values, and more. By starting at a macro level and honing in, MAA believes students will have more understanding and flexibility to engage in styles that best suit them personally. They also offer private lessons and a class to help create an art portfolio for those seeking a career in the arts.
