Agave Grill has some of the best Mexican food in Hartford. Seen as an upscale Mexican restaurant, Agave Grill offers traditional Mexican favorites including quesadillas, which you can order several different ways – vegetable, barbecue pork, portabello mushroom and spinach, spicy shrimp, or steak or chicken; tacos; mango barbecue ribs; enchiladas; and burritos. There is also regular, live mariachi music played in the restaurant. Agave Grill opens Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. (Brunch is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

This no-frills Mexican restaurant has some of the best Mexican food in Hartford. There’s not much to see at Ay Chihuahua, but the food does its culture justice. Monte Alban has some of the best Mexican food in Hartford. Customers can expect to find traditional items such as tacos, burritos and enchiladas. However, it’s the dinner specials at Monte Alban that really shine. The restaurant is smal,l but the prices are reasonable. In warmer weather, customers can sit outside on an outdoor patio. Monte Alban is open Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

At Taqueria Tavern, “food is art” and “tequila is life,” or so the signs say. But both slogans are really shown in both their food and tequila menus. Taqueria Tavern has some of the best Mexican food in Hartford. Choose from tacos to empanadas to quesadillas to ribs. For appetizers, try the Queso Fundido, which is made with Mexican chorizo, grilled pablano peppers and onions covered with melted Oaxaca and Chihuahua cheeses and served piping hot with warm flour tortillas. Another fan favorite – the Mexican Mac n’ Cheese, which is made with hot capatavi pasta blended and baked with extra-sharp cheddar and Chihuahua cheeses, cream, seasoned bread crumbs, spices and crumbled bacon. The food is authentic, the atmosphere lends itself nicely to that authentic feel and the prices are affordable. What’s not to like? The portions are a very good size no matter what you order and the food is very good at a very good price. It certainly beats any chain.
