There is nothing better on a hot summer day then some homemade ice cream. Well you are in luck, you don’t have to go far to find some of the best! You can’t go wrong with any of these, your toughest decision will be which flavor to choose.
If you are in the Enfield/ East Windsor area on a hot summer day stop if for what will surely be a great treat. On this quiet farm you’ll find amazing ice cream. Sure you’ll find all the regular flavors plus some fun new ones like Cotton Candy, Red Raspberry Chocolate Chip (highly recommended), Rum Raisin and Toasted Almond. They also have soft serve, low fat, sugar free, yogurt and sorbet on the menu. Having a special occasion? Then order a custom made pie or cake from their premium ice cream. Operating hours are 12pm – 9pm daily.
The UConn Dairy Bar is a UConn tradition! All the ice cream is made will milk direct from UConn cows. The Dairy Bar is staffed by UConn students. The Dairy Bar sells cones, sundaes, cookie sandwiches, milkshakes, ice cream sodas (yes, real old fashioned ice cream sodas) ice cream floats, custom ice cream cakes and 1/2 gallons. They always have at least 24 flavors to choose from including all the standards plus fun flavors for Husky Fans. “Jonathan Supreme” which is vanilla ice cream with peanut butter swirl and chocolcate covered peanuts and “Husky Tracks”, vanilla ice cream with fudge swirl and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. Seasonal flavors include coconut, peach (out of this world) peppermint stick and pumpkin. Open year round,the Uconn Dairy Bar is a great family spot, not only can you get some great ice cream you can take a tour of both the creamery and the animal barns.
This is some of the most heavenly ice cream you will find on the planet! Tulmeadow Farms makes very rich, 16% butterfat gourmet ice cream in 50 flavors. While the top selling flavor is Red Razz Chocolate Chip, there are so many good ones it’s hard to pick favorites but some that stand out are – Brownie (batter brownie dough), Banana Chocolate Chip, Cranberry, Pumpkin, Chocolate Malt with Malt Balls and Orange Pineapple. If a cone, dish, sandwich or “ice cream on-a-stick” isn’t enough then take home a pints or quart or pick up an ice cream pie. Farm store hours vary so call ahead for hours.
One taste of this homemade ice cream and you are hooked. J. Foster makes their ice cream in small batches so it is rich and creamy like nothing you have ever tasted. Among the flavor standouts are Toasted Coconut, Mocha Heath Bar, Rum Raisin and a Vanilla with black cherries. All flavors are available in cones and cups plus pints and quarts to take home. They make custom cakes and pies plus sorbets and gelato. Sign up for the “frequent purchase program” and you can get kids cups and cones for free. Hours are Sunday – Thursday 12pm – 9pm; Friday & Saturday 12pm – 10:30pm.
A.C. Petersen Farms has been a central Connecticut institution since the early 1900s. Andrew C. Petersen started the business with one milk delivery route in 1914 and expanded that opportunity into farming, milk and dairy production, and restaurant operations. Open year-round, it’s known above all else, for its delicious, homemade ice cream. Pick any flavor, you’ll go back for more. Maybe try a float, or some pie with ice cream? It’s tucked away on Park Road as one of West Hartford’s ice cream hot spots (not too far from West Hartford Center). In case you’re in the mood for a meal, grab a quick dinner, with diner-like food selection, but don’t leave without ice cream. Even better, in the summer, eat outdoors!
