BOSTON,Mass. (AP)_ Boston Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval will have surgery on his left shoulder in the next few days.
The team announced Monday the procedure will be performed by Dr. James Andrews in Florida. No timetable was given for how long Sandoval is expected to be sidelined, and the Red Sox say they will comment after the operation.
Sandoval is in the second season of a $95 million, five-year contract. He’s been on the disabled list since April 13, retroactive to April 11, with a strained shoulder.
A two-time NL All-Star and the 2012 World Series MVP with San Francisco, Sandoval lost his starting job at the end of spring training this year and was benched in favor of Travis Shaw. Sandoval is 0 for 6 with four strikeouts and a walk while appearing in three games, one start.
Affectionately nicknamed Kung Fu Panda, the 29-year-old Sandoval has often appeared overweight during his Red Sox tenure. He hit a disappointing .245 with 10 homers and 47 RBIs over 126 games in 2015.
