BRENTWOOD, N.H. (CBS Connecticut)– A New Hampshire man is accused of severely abusing his 3-month-old son after breaking several of the child’s bones.
WMUR 9 reports that Newmarket father Jose Orta-Santana may have abused the child from as early as three days old. Court papers say the abuse went unreported until Saturday when an incident occurred in the family’s apartment. The suspect was reportedly home alone with the child and called the son’s mother saying the boy’s head was swelling because he “tripped” holding him.
The child was taken to Exeter Hospital after suffering a seizure and was then airlifted to Boston. After examination of the child, doctors discovered evidence of two skull fractures and 17 broken bones, as reported by WMUR 9.
Court papers report that police told the suspect the child’s injuries weren’t consistent with the story. Orta-Santana told police, “I know. I hit him a few times and I’m sorry.” Orta-Santana told authorities he punched the baby 3 times on the side of the head after becoming frustrated. The father also admitted to squeezing the child hard after fits of crying.
Jose Orta-Santana is charged with felony first- and second-degree assault and is being held on $100,000 bail.
“This is probably the most serious child abuse case that we’ve dealt with in a long, long time,” Chief Kevin Cyr told WMUR 9. “I’ve been a police officer 30 years, and this has got to be in the top two or three that I’ve ever seen.”
The baby boy was put in a medically induced coma and remains hospitalized.
