Here we are in the midst of exam week in the classroom, however the on-court exam for the UConn Women took place Saturday at Notre Dame… They passed with a win. Was it an A ? a B ? No, there is still a lot of work to be done according to Geno Auriemma, but the Huskies have righted the ship. And perhaps in the process, found their leader.

Mogran Tuck is an All American in waiting if she builds off Saturday’s performance. Didn’t matter if it was a post up or drive from the key, Notre Dame had no answers for her..But it was more than the scoring aspect of her game…She’s vocal and played some quality defense..The jack of all trades came to the forefront  and that’s a great step forward.

What Kia Stokes did Saturday is what she does best. Rebound and defend. Her work on teh boards helped change the game in UConn’s favor. But it was her putback of a missed Kia Nurse free throw in the 1st half impressed Coach Auriemma most. It had authority..strong and confident Now only if she could do that EVERY game. The Huskies would be a very different team.

And Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis’ 36 minutes shouldn’t go unnoticed. An okay shooting game. But it was the hustle plays, the passing, and her defense against her three point shooting counterpart in South Bend in Michala Mabrey that stood out. Sure, Mabrey had a few open looks. But KML harassed her all game long and it played a role in no help for a very talented Jewell Loyd.

As always, you’d rather go into exams and the layoff on a good note..That’s exactly what they did Saturday. Is there stuff to clean up ? Absolutely..24 turnovers not acceptable, especially when 11 come from your starting backcourt. But the Irish only scored 14pts and were beaten badly again in the paint by UConn. The Coaches can make video from a win look like a 20 point loss..That’s humbling, yet makes one work harder to be the best.

When the Huskies take the court in Bridgeport next Friday, Sadie Edwards won’t be there. She’s decided to transfer when the semester is over in search of more playing time. We wish her well and hope good things happen to her. Her decision to leave more proof that wanting to play at UConn and playing at UConn are two very different things and it’s not for everyone..

We’ll be back after next weekend’s games with DePaul & UCLA.. Speaking of DePaul, Coach Doug Bruno will be Geno’s guest on the next Coach’s Show…Likely Wednesday the 17th…Hope you can join us 🙂
