HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut’s Democratic and Republican auditors say Secretary of the State Denise Merrill’s office did not violate any state laws by emailing a monthly newsletter highlighting activities from her office.

Merrill asked for the review in October, apologizing that the newsletter created an impression she was using her position for political purposes. The newsletter, which has since been stopped, was sent to many of Merrill’s fellow Democrats.

In a report released Monday, the auditors said the newsletter project did not violate state statutes. But they warned Merrill “there may always be a question” as to whether the newsletters were supposed to inform about the office’s activities or to “get your name out to those individuals for partisan political purposes.”

The auditors said they found “no substantive documentation” proving they were political.
