(Hartford, Conn./CBS Connecticut) – Hartford police say nearly four dozen cats found living in squalor in a Bannister Street home last Friday are in need of new permanent homes.

The felines were found along with two birds when officers conducted a welfare check and found a man dead inside.

Detectives haven’t yet said officially what led to Anthony Arena’s death but they did not find any signs of foul play.

As for the animals, all tested negative for feline leukimia/AIDS and are in good shape.
