it was quite the 2013 for sports in connecticut…let’s look back…let’s start here at home with the connecticut brand — the uconn huskies…what a tumultuous year it was up in storrs…things started with the uconn men’s hoops team — banned from postseason play and without any real payoff for winning — turn in a 20 win season and play beyond most expectations…now they’re primed for a special winter…the uconn women, dare we say, an underdog going into march madness, won their eighth national title led by the sterling play of frosh breanna stewart and the veteran leadership of so many…not long after uconn hoisted the trophy, a new “jonathon” was announced…the huskies giving a face-lift to their famous puppy logo, creating a more menanciing one that was not widely accepted, but over time, will become the staple the “old jonathon” always was…speaking of face-lift’s, the quest for the whalers to return took a tough blow when the connecticut whale of the a-h-l was thrown back to the anals of time and the wolf pack returned as hartford’s a-h-l team…speaking of hockey — maybe one of the shining moments for connecticut sports this year came in the ncaa frozen four finale — where yale and quinnipiac met — two teams right down the road from each other — on college’s biggest stage, with yale winning it’s first ever national title…meanwhile, back in storrs, there was conference madness…from the big east to the american athletic conference, it’s surely been a journey…and let’s not forget the boys of summer — westport little league sent us on quite a thrill ride finishing as the runner-up on the u-s side of things at the little league world series, coming in fourth overall and reminding everyone what having fun in sports is all about…there unfortunately was the not-so-shining moments as well…at the top, aaron hernandez, charged with murder, leaving those from his native bristol to his new hometown outside boston and patriots fans alike scratching their heads and wondering where it all went wrong with such a talented individual…from a disgraced connecticut son to one who rode his connecticut roots from groton to the big apple to the major league baseball all-star game…didn’t matt harvey make us all proud representing connecticut when he started on the mound at the all-star game for the mets at his home park of citi field…we saw uconn football this fall pratically reach obscurity, before being reinvigorated and starting a new chapter with the exciting bob diaco who certainly brings promise to the program that ended on a three-game win streak…and finally…..on a more personal note, i’m admittedly not a red sox fan…i like the yankees….but seeing the worst-to-first red sox capture a world series title stung just a little less this year…we all watched in horror during the week in april that started with the bombings at the boston marathon…i shed tears then and i shed some tears when the sox hoisted the title in the fall…it wasn’t about the red sox — or baseball — or boston — but the human spirit….doesn’t that best define 2013 in connecticut sports…from tragedy to euphoria and everything in between…happy new year everyone…with a comment on sports, i’m michael guerrera
