STORRS, Conn. (AP) _ UConn has tapped 11-year coaching veteran Chris MacKenzie to lead its women’s hockey team.

School officials announced MacKenzie’s hiring as head coach Thursday. He’ll succeed Heather Linstad, who resigned for undisclosed reasons in March after serving as the team’s only coach since it was established in 2000.

MacKenzie was an assistant women’s hockey coach last season at Ohio State, which finished 19-15-3. He previously was head coach of the Niagara women’s team for two years, compiling a 23-31-10 record that included two second-place finishes in the CHA.

The 2000 Niagara graduate also was an assistant coach for the UMass-Lowell Division I men’s team from 2001 to 2009.

MacKenzie says he’s excited about taking over at UConn and plans to bring in a strong work ethic and enthusiasm.
