NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee   says Rhode Island’s coastal communities “really got pounded,” but that after hearing from the governors of new Jersey, New York and Connecticut, on a conference call with President Barack Obama, the state got lucky in some ways.

Chafee says Obama told them the federal government would assist the states with their recovery from the superstorm known as Sandy.

The governor is touring storm damage Tuesday, and has visited communities including South Kingstown, where several beach cottages were washed away, and Westerly, where beach homes are cut off. He’s also visiting Block Island and Newport, which both saw flooding.

Chafee says that aside from the southern coast, the rest of Rhode Island was spared the worst of the storm.
