A teenager from Tolland is recovering in an Alaska hospital, after falling into a crack in a glacier over the weekend.
Valdeez, Alaska Fire Chief George Keeney says the 16-year-old fell through snow that hid the top of the crevasse.
“That crack he fell into was several hundred feet deep, and it narrows as it goes down,” Keeney said. “He fell fifty feet plus, and he was wedged into the crack.”
A crew of three went into the crevasse, and rescued Kurt Schenher.
Kurt Schenher had been hiking with his brother before he fell.
Rescue workers were afraid Kurt Schenher would not survive, because some of his clothes were ripped off in the fall, and his body was wedged against ice.
He suffered hypothermia, but his mother told firefighters her son is now sitting up in bed, and improving.
