HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A physics instructor at Stratford’s Bunnell High School has been named as Connecticut’s new 2011 Teacher of the Year.

Kristen Ann Record was honored during Connecticut Education Commissioner Mark McQuillan’s surprise announcement Wednesday at the school.

Record, a onetime research scientist, is the daughter of two public school teachers and has taught at Bunnell High for a decade. She’s also done research at Harvard University and the National Renewable Energy Academies in Golden, Colo.

Record was picked from more than 50,000 public school educators in Connecticut, and will travel next spring to Washington D.C., to meet President Obama.
