Behind-the-Scenes Tours: A Veterans Day Remembrance of Military History

The Connecticut Historical Society hosts two special behind-the-scenes tours where visitors get a docent-led look at some military items in the CHS collection. Military history items include scrapbooks, uniforms, letters, photographs and weapons used. Of particular attention are Connecticut connections in the wars fought, dating back to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The tours are part of a monthly thematic-based behind-the-scenes tour series and last about 45 minutes. Fees of $5 for members and $15 for non-members includes general admission for the entire day at the museum.

This is a very unique experience to meet and talk one-on-one with veterans of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and see some of the incredible aircraft used in many of those combats. Also, visitors are able to sit in the cockpits of a F-100 Super Sabre, the WWII Thunderbolt, the Huey Helicopter, the Cobra Helicopter and more. Activities for the young and young at heart, including a full-flight simulator experience, occur throughout the day at New England’s largest aviation museum. Also, military service support groups will also be on hand with information on ways to help our troops, past and present. Admission prices range from $6.50 (ages 4-11) to $12 (12+) with discounts for seniors and free admission for kids under 4. Veterans and active service personnel are free all month in November.

This event presents a special time for kids, ages 8-13, to meet and learn from veterans and discover what it was like to serve. Hear intriguing stories direct from some military heroes and show your appreciation for their dedicated service to our country. Listen and dance to great patriotic songs plus kids (of all ages) can create and take home their own medal. Refreshments are provided and pre-registration is required for this come-and-go 1.5-hour program.
Veterans Day & Native American Celebration
Institute for American Indian Studies Museum

The Institute For American Indian Studies celebrates Veterans Day in a unique, and appropriately fitting, way. Each year, IAIS honors a local Native American who has served in the United States military. In 2013, Sam Thunderheart of Apache and Taino heritage will be honored, as well as all veterans, both Native and non-Native, who have served our country. A traditional ceremony will be held in the outdoor village, followed by a light lunch; all free to visitors.
Freedom Run 5K

Hit the trails of Hartford’s Riverside Park on a 5K course alongside the Connecticut River to honor our country’s veterans. Proceeds of the race will benefit Give2TheTroops, an organization dedicated to building morale for America’s armed forces deployed around the world through care packages and letters. In addition, collections of gift cards (iTunes, Amazon.com, etc) will be made onsite on race day. Special
pre-race tributes are planned as well.
6th Annual Veterans Day 5K Race/Walk

This race is open to runners and walkers of all ages and skills. Proceeds benefit local efforts to construct a Fisher House on the grounds of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System’s West Haven campus. Fisher Houses provide free accommodations to families of veterans receiving inpatient care.
