Memorial Day weekend is a time to honor our fallen soldiers. It has also become a staple of our culture to kick start the summer. Connecticut, as well as surrounding states, have unique attractions to plan your weekend getaway. In less than a two-hour commute, you can be in Boston or Newport to visit tourist attractions and Memorial Day events. You can also find weekend plans when choosing to stay closer to home within Connecticut.

Start summer with the traditions at Mystic Seaport. It will be hosting Lobster Days and Decoration Day on Memorial Day weekend. On May 24 and 25, 2014, seafood lovers will dive into lobster platters including single or double lobsters, corn on the cob, coleslaw and drinks. A secondary option is the all-American hot dog platter with chips and a drink. A cash bar will be available. Enjoy your meal while seated along the shore. After your meal, take the time to explore the museum, ships and exhibits. On Memorial Day, May 26, pay tribute to fallen soldiers of the Civil War at Decoration Day. The services start at 10:30 a.m. at the Fishtown Chapel and the memorial is at noon.

Cross the state line into Rhode Island as you make plans for Memorial Day weekend. Misquamicut Beach is a short drive from Connecticut and a popular summer attraction for New Englanders. Beaches stretch between Watch Hill and Weekapaug, RI. The beach caters to adults and children alike. Get your vineyard passport ready for a summer full of tastings along the Connecticut Wine Trail. A popular winery along the trail is Gouveia Vineyard located in Wallingford. The views, atmosphere and, of course, the wine make it stand out from the rest. The vineyard has indoor and outdoor seating available including picnic tables and green grass for a picnic blanket. Purchase wine by the glass or the bottle. For the cost of $8 per person, you can enjoy a wine tasting, sampling five of the wines. Visitors love to pack their favorite foods to eat along with their vino. Gouveia permits outside food on premises. Memorial Day kicks starts summer hours of Monday through Thursday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
