Connecticut’s Best Stuff For Young Kids

January 12, 2011 5:28 PM

It can be hard to find activities for the 5- to 8-year-old age group. They are getting too old for the “little kid” stuff, but they may not fully grasp some of the concepts offered at museums and other exhibits. Fortunately, Connecticut’s best stuff for young kids (5-8) will engage and entertain – and chances are, kids will learn a little something, too! – Nicole Roberge

Flamig Farm

West Simsbury, CT 06092
(860) 658-5070

With a zoo of farm animals, pony rides, horse- and tractor-drawn hay rides, summer adventure camp and haunted hayrides, Flamig Farm has an incredible amount to offer kids. The farm features bunnies, peacocks, llamas, piglets, horses and chickens. Pony Rides are on Saturday and Sunday, but private pony rides can be booked any day of the week. The farm is open from April through November, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and winter store hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Connecticut Science Center

250 Columbus Blvd.
Hartford, CT 06103

The Connecticut Science Center offers excitement for any child, wherever his or her interests lie. Kids can catch engaging and fun shows in the 3D theater, splash around in swirling water play areas in “A Water Park of Wonder” (you may want to pack a change of clothes), test their athletic ability in the “Sports Lab” and even see what it feels like to be in outer space in the “Exploring Space” exhibit. “Forces in Motion” allows children to test gravity, and the new exhibit, “Hurricane Force,” is where kids learn about historical hurricanes in Connecticut and then feel 78-mile-an-hour winds! The Center closes at 5 p.m., but they stop selling tickets at 4 p.m. There is a parking garage on site, which is convenient if you have several children with you or go in a group.

Hartford Children’s Theatre

360 Farmington Ave.
Hartford, CT 06105
(860) 249-7970

The Hartford Children’s Theatre brings children’s favorite stories to life, and teaches children to express their creativity. Plays such as “Willy Wonka,” “Annie” and “School House Rock” have appeared on stage at the theatre, and new shows are always coming. There is a summer “YouTheatre” and lessons are offered for acting, voice, piano and guitar. The “Discovery Company” is for children in Pre-K through third grade who are interested in acting. This venue, like all of Hartford’s best stuff for young kids, offers so many ways for children to get inspired, learn about the arts and interact with other children.
