Q: This is a great vintage car and an even better great vintage color. What can you tell us about it?
A: I’ve been wanting a vintage car for a long time. I saw a bunch of cars that were definitely huge projects, rust buckets and stuff like that. I found a ’56 Bel Air at one point that needed just about everything except the mice that were in it. I gave up my search about four years ago. One day I was coming home after a gig I was playing and that thing was parked on the side of the road. It said $1,500 on it. I had $750 in my pocket. I offered it to the guy. He let me go home with it.
Q: You got it for $750!?
A: Yeah, I got it for $750.
Q: It probably cost that much new back in 1965.
A: Exactly. It was rust and Bondo and a powdery blue color. Two friends helped me work on it. I don’t know a thing about cars. I’m only a musician.
Q: You say Bondo, what do you mean by that?
A: It had some rust holes in it, so we had to cut out some parts and panels, and weld on some new sheet metal and “Bondo” over that, to smooth it out. The car’s not perfect. It’s a fun little runner up and down the street.
Q: You park it outside your bar?
A: I park it at my bar, The Outer Space. That’s where it lives.
Q: Do you live near here?
A: I live about a mile away. It’s not my every day driver at this point because I have small children and I’m not gonna put them in an antique death machine. I’ll drive myself around in the morning to do my errands and stuff.
Q: What do you call the color?
A: It’s turquoise. It’s not a 1965 color, much closer to a 1956 Dodge color. I got color sheets and did all that nerdy stuff. The ’65 colors were too bland for me. I’m a little more spicy.
Q: Tell me a little about the bar here.
A: The Outer Space is a music venue, live music six nights a week. We present all original music. We also have The Space across the way, which is for all ages with a coffee shop and music. I’ve been open there for nine years and opened this in March, 2011. For the past 10 years I’ve been a song writer and guitarist for The Mighty Purple, but I’m concentrating a little more on running the clubs now.
