When our son was just a toddler, we started the tradition of taking his holiday photo at one of the local Connecticut tree farms. Tree farms provide the perfect backdrop for a wintery photo, and one of our favorite farms is Kogut’s Hemlock Hill Tree Farm in Somers, CT. Walking the ground of Hemlock Hill makes you feel like you are out in the middle of the woods, when you are really only a few hundred feet off the main road! We always manage to get the perfect picture for our holiday card, and our friends and family enjoy seeing our son in the same background each year.

If you are looking for a truly unique photo for your holiday card this year, look no further than the annual Mystic Boat Parade in Mystic, CT. Held on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend each year, this is the perfect way to enjoy a fun day with your family, and get an unforgettable picture by the water. In the afternoon, Santa Claus himself arrives at Mystic River Park by tugboat, and is available for pictures after he greets everyone on shore. Incredible photos can also be taken along the water when the Boat Parade begins at 6 p.m. Plenty of lighted vessels from sailboats to rowboats can be seen floating along the river, providing a holiday scene that everyone will love!

Most towns in Connecticut hold some sort of winter event on the town green complete with a tree lighting ceremony and holiday music. The Ellington Winterfest as a great example of a perfect place to get a memorable holiday photo, though other town festivities will work just as well. Lighting of the Christmas tree in the Ellington gazebo usually occurs around 4 p.m., and families are invited to come up to the tree and take pictures. I’ve had more than one friend use this venue as their holiday card backdrop. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Frosty the Snowman often show up at Winterfest as well, so plenty of fun photo opportunities abound!
