TALE OF THE TAPE

Tale Of The Tape: Philadelphia Eagles At New York Giants

Quarterback
Winner Michael Vick has put good numbers on the board in the first quarter of the season, but there is something missing as his team has lost three in a row after an opening victory. Vick has thrown for 248.2 yards per game and has a 5-2 TD-interception ratio, but he has not given the Eagles the consistency they need at the position.
Winner The pressure on Eli Manning has never been greater than it is right now. Not only is his team winless after four games and looking like it may hit levels that it hasn’t been at since 1964, he has thrown nine interceptions. What makes matters worse is that his brother is off to a brilliant start and the comparisons between the two have never been more harsh.
Offense
Winner The Eagles’ running game is the best in the league, but that’s skewed by Vick’s ability to take off from the pocket. But don’t minimize LeSean McCoy who has already run for 478 yards and is averaging 6.0 yards per carry. DeSean Jackson is a game-breaking wide receiver who should be able to get open against the Giants while Jason Avant should also be a factor.
The Giants got on the board when Manning hit Victor Cruz on a go route in the second quarter and the Giants had a big-play touchdown. However, they could not sustain it against the Chiefs’ well-coached defense. The Giants need to get more from their running game, which has averaged an abominable 57.8 yards per game.
Defense
The Eagles were overwhelmed by the Broncos, but the assignment should be much easier against the one-dimensional Giants. Linebacker DeMeco Ryans has attempted to hold the Eagles defense together as he has recorded a team-high 36 tackles. The Eagles have not been getting a good enough pass rush to cause problems for opposing offenses.
Winner The defense has been awful since last season, and that’s probably the most troubling aspect of the way the Giants have been playing. They have been getting outhit and outworked on the defensive side, and the Giants don’t appear to have any playmakers. Jason Pierre-Paul has 1.0 sack in four games and that’s not going to get it done.
Special Teams
Winner The Eagles got torn apart by the Broncos’ Trindon Holliday, who returned a kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown. Alex Henery has made 7-of-10 FG attempts this year, and is just 2-of-5 on attempts of 40-to-49 yards.
Winner The Giants don’t offer much in special teams play either, as they were burned by Holliday and Kansas City’s Dexter McCluster for punt return touchdowns. That kind of awful performance is simply unacceptable. Josh Brown has made just 4-of-6 FG attempts, and that’s not good enough either for a team that is struggling to compete.

We'll Just Call it a Tie

The Giants have been awful, but they played decently for the first 30 minutes against the Chiefs before it fell apart in the second half. An 0-4 start hurts, but there is still time to turn the season around and they can’t let a home game against a divisional opponent slip through their fingers.
