With a new America’s Cup event and a gathering of tall ships headed to Newport this summer, Rhode Island’s 2012 tourist season aims to attract visitors with a celebration of its nautical heritage.
Amistad America has been re-thinking its business plan after damage on its return from a trip to Cuba required an estimated $100.000 in repairs. After the boat is repaired and passes its Coast Guard inspections,the plan is for the ship to spend the warm weather months operating between New Haven, New London and Mystic, running youth educational programs, day sails and short trips.
A weak economy is expected to reduce funding, revenue and tourists at next year’s festival of tall ships in New London.
