Heat was the cause of a cracked blade in an engine on an F-35 fighter jet that prompted the entire fleet to be briefly grounded last month, manufacturer Pratt & Whitney said Wednesday.

GE Aviation has abandoned efforts to keep alive development of its alternative engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The move leaves East Hartford-based Pratt & Whitney as the sole supplier.
The House Armed Services Subcommittee has voted to require the Pentagon to re-open its engine competition if it asks for more money for the engine for the F-35 fighter. Pratt & Whitney is the current engine supplier.
The Defense Department has ordered a stop to work on an alternate engine for the military Joint Strike fighter. Pratt & Whitney Aircraft is the engine’s primary supplier.
