(Hartford, CONN./ CBS Connecticut)– Hartford Police have charged a city woman with animal cruelty after a dog was found frozen to death on New Year’s Day.

50-year-old Michelle Bennett is charged with cruelty to animals. The three-year-old pit bull was found frozen to death inside a dog house in the backyard of a home on Adams Street. The dog’s owner is in jail on unrelated charges.

Police say the canine was malnourished and showed signs of hypothermia.
