(New London, Conn./CBS Connecticut) – A man is being charged with driving through a locked gate at New London’s Ocean Beach Park.

Police received a call just before 9:30 Thursday night that a car had broken through the gate at 1225 Ocean Avenue.

An officer who was assisting in an unrelated incident downtown spotted the suspect and the vehicle in a convenience store parking lot on Bank Street.

Police say 32-year-old Hector Santiago of the Wauregan section of Plainfield told them he went fishing on the beach and when he was about to leave, noticed he was locked in, got scared, and drove through the fence.

Santiago is charged with DUI, reckless endangerment, evading responsibility, and criminal mischief.  He was released on a $1,000 bond.

Parks employe pegged the damage at over $2,000.
