Study: Hunger Concerns For One In Five College Students

(Hartford, Conn./CBS Connecticut) – A new report suggests hunger may threaten as many as 20-percent of college students.

The report entitled “Hunger On Campus” is a study of 3,800 students from 34 colleges in a dozen states.

The reports findings show as many as 48-percent of students reporting “food insecurity”.

In addition, 22-percent reported low levels of food security that put them in the category of hungry.

This is in spite students being enrolled in a campus meal plan.

The study also found that the typical food insecure student in the study if a part-time worker also receiving financial aid and aid assistance but still barely getting by.

It says colleges should pursue ways to address the issue, including establishing campus food pantries and other benefits access programs.
