(New Haven, Conn./CBS Connecticut) – New Haven police are putting the word out about facsimile firearms.
The department issued a release today raising concerns after investigators noticed an uptick in gun complaints.
In many of them, police say the weapons were paintball, facsimile or BB guns.
Detectives say most of the calls involve groups embroiled in turf or gang conflicts.
A study of 911 reports indicated people fearing those guns were real.
In addition, New Haven police are concerned that retaliation against those with fake gun could ultimately involve real weapons.
Also, robberies and other crimes could be committed with facsimile weapons, police said.
New Haven Assistant Police Chief Archie Generoso says they want to “avert a tragedy”.
Police are asking for the public’s help by calling police at (203) 946-6304, detectives at (203) 946-6316 or by dialing 911 to report criminal activity.
