HARTFORD, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) – Flanked by firefighters at Engine Company One in Downtown Hartford Friday, Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal called for a first-of-its-kind national firefighter cancer registry.
The database would collect information on firefighter cancer cases to advance and support research into firefighter heath, said Blumenthal. Firefighter participation in the registry would be voluntary, he said. .
Blumenthal says the database is needed considering that firefighters have higher rates of cancer and higher rates of cancer-related deaths compared to the general population.
He says the cost of establishing the registry would be minimal, and he’s hopeful Congress will act on the proposal by the end of the year.
