Layoffs, Privatization At State DDS

(Hartford, Conn./CBS Connecticut) – The state Department of Developmental Services is out with an FY-2017 budget that eliminates over 400 addition jobs and transitions facilities run by the state to the private sector.

In a letter from DDS Commissioner Morna Murray, to the Office of Policy and Management, 492 positions will be eliminated by the first of the year, bringing to 605 the total number of reductions.

DDS says the job reductions and consolidations will save nearly $70 million.

In the letter, Murray acknowledges the changes will not come without challenges, adding that the department is requesting the private providers give first preference on jobs to laid off state employee.
