Teacher Placed On Leave For Alleged Assault Of 3rd Grader

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut and AP) – A middle school teacher in Connecticut has been placed on administrative leave following allegations she assaulted a third-grade student.

Police confirmed they’re investigating the alleged incident at Roberto Clemente Leadership Academy in New Haven.

The student’s mother, Shamara Miller, told the New Haven Register her 9-year-old son was serving in-school suspension May 20 when there was a verbal altercation with the teacher, whom officials have declined to name. Miller says surveillance footage shows the teacher grabbing her son by the neck, slamming him against a locker and then dragging him to a nearby storage room.

District spokeswoman Mercy Quaye says the teacher was placed on paid leave June 4 and will not return pending the findings of the investigation.

New Haven attorney Louis Rubano says a lawsuit is forthcoming.
