DEEP Issues Warning After Beaver Attack

(Hartford, Conn./CBS Connecticut) – The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is advising boaters and swimmers to stay away from a portion of the Quinebaug River at the Route 101 bridge on the Pomfret/Killingly town line.

Department spokesman Dennis Schain says two swimmers had to be treated after being attacked by an aggressive beaver.

Schain says the two were treated for their bites at Day Kimball Hospital.

He says crews did a search for the animal today, to no avail.

Schain says while it’s not normal for a beaver to behave aggressively toward humans, they’re not ruling out that it may be rabid.

En-Con police say it doesn’t appear that beavers are making a home in the area of the attack, although a den was spotted just south of where the incident took place.
