VERNON, Conn. (CBS Connecticut and AP) –
Fire investigators have determined that a propane dryer is what caused a powerful explosion that destroyed a Vernon home Thursday afternoon.
Officials said they are still not sure what caused the propane to ignite, but believe the explosion was accidental.
The explosion injured seven people, including four children, and sending debris flying.
Two children and two adults remain hospitalized, including a 35-year-old woman, reported in critical condition.
Police, fire and rescue crews responded to the home in Vernon Thursday afternoon.
Three of the victims were outside when they arrived, while four more remained trapped in the rubble.
Crews dug through what was left of the house to pull them to safety.
The force of the blast blew the front door of the home across the street into a neighbor’s yard.
Glass and other debris littered the roadway.
Connecticut State Police troopers are assisting Vernon police and fire.
