NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) – A Newtown Middle School teacher was arrested Wednesday for carrying a gun on school grounds, said police.
Jason M. Adams, 46 of Newtown, is charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds. He allegedly entered the school Wednesday morning carrying a concealed firearm. Police say he was detained by school security personnel after being spotted with the gun. Police say Adams does have a valid State of Connecticut pistol permit.
The Newtown school system issued the following statement on the incident:
“This matter is very serious and troubling, both the Newtown Public School system and the
Newtown Police Department took immediate steps to address the matter. The teacher was
immediately detained by security personnel. The teacher has additionally been placed on
administrative leave pending an administrative investigation. Both agencies have been working
closely together to investigate the incident and are taking precautions to ensure the continued
safety of our students, staff and community members.”
Adams was processed at the Newtown Police Department and released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on April 20.
