For the second straight season, the Huskies demolished a ranked team in the Sweet 16. This time, it was Mississippi State… The Bulldogs faced a UConn Team for the first time, and like the last 20 years, what they prepared for on video wasn’t exactly what they saw in person. The defense set up the offense, racked up 61 points in the first half and frankly, didn’t need to score again.
Breanna Stewart and her fellow Seniors are playing at a whole different level. It’s tourney time and given the slew of upsets we saw this weekend, UConn looks more focused than ever. Tonight they play a Texas team that felt the wrath of the Huskies in Albany last March to the tune of a 51 point loss. While many of the names and faces on both sides are back, the Longhorns aren’t ready to beat UConn… Baylor, who is the other #1 seed still playing, beat Texas handily three times this season. That doesn’t mean Karen Aston hasn’t done a great job in the resurgence of Texas Women’s Hoops, from 12 to 22 to 24 to 31 wins speaks volumes.
They’re still a young team with a high ceiling… just not this season.. Not against this team chasing history…. And the can make some history again tonight. A 9th straight Final Four and the first three time repeat champ to even get back to a Final Four… The 99′ Lady Vols and the 05′ Huskies couldn’t do that…
As for the tweet sent by the Globe’s Dan Schaughnessy his weekend, the right people responded in the correct manner, led by Geno Auriemma. Jay Bilas of ESPN chimed in just fine as well. It’s a 22 year run of historic proportions…Win a championship next Tuesday and the Huskies will own HALF of the titles since 1995… And yes, it’s up to the other programs across the country to match their level. Doris Burke says it every year at the Final Four… Go watch UConn practice for a few days… then you’ll get get an understanding of what their about.
Join us tonight from Bridgeport for all the action of UConn and Texas from Webster Bank Arena at 6:30.
