Newest Attack Sub Christened At Electric Boat

(Groton, Conn./CBS Connecticut) – First Lady Michelle Obama was on hand today at Electric Boat in Groton to christen the latest nuclear attack submarine in the Virginia class.

The USS Ilinois is 377 feet and weighs in at nearly 8,000 tons.  Mrs. Obama was joined by E-B officials and those from the Congressional delegations of both Connecticut and Rhode Island for the ceremony.

The first lady says it means a lot to her to be the ship’s sponsor, named for her home state.

She says the experience of serving as sponsor is truly meaningful.

Mrs. Obama said she learned a great deal about the technology and power of the submarine.

She took time to thank the military personnel who will make up the ship’s crew, as well as the men and women who helped build the vessel.
